"A Discovery of Witches" (A bewitched Ashley Review)

Hocus Pocus Readers!!!

Yes, that might be a little corny, but I thought since the book is titled "A Discovery of Witches" I would be a little witchy, the good kind not the bad. I found this book on the shelves of Target and decided to give it a try. Deborah Harkness, the author, definitely takes you to another world of magic and mystical characters  that you never knew existed.

Here is the Goodreads summary of this bewitching book....

"A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism."

Diana Bishop, is a witch who doesn't like to use her powers. She has worked for everything that she has ever gotten in her life. While trying to work on research, she unwittingly uses magic and catches the eye of a sexy vampire. Matthew Clairmont has an agenda all on his own, that I won't give away. Can these two get past there differences and work together to find the manuscript or will their differences get in the way and they let the manuscript fall into the wrong hands?

I have to admit this book is a good little read and it has a lot of twists that you never see coming. Nothing can compare to this book and it is nothing like Twilight at all, these vampires don't sparkle and are a lot more bad-ass than Edward, could ever hope to be.

Happy Reading

  Ashley

Rating: 4/5 Sabrina the Teenage Witches.....
